Audubon/ University Area

Audubon/ University Area

Mainly known for being the home to both Tulane and Loyola Universities and Audubon Park, this area is actually comprised of several neighborhoods including Freret, Broadmoor, Fontainebleau, Marleyville and Black Pearl. The area was developed from several plantations in the late 1800s or in the case of Broadmoor, developed from swampland. Decorated by sprawling oak trees, wide boulevards and some of the larger houses in the city, this Uptown neighborhood is easily one of the most geographically attractive areas of the city.

St. Charles Avenue with its many mansions is one of the most iconic parts of this neighborhood. Residents and tourists alike spend time on the famed streetcar riding up and down this avenue to view the mansions with their breathtaking architecture. Many of the home owners take extra care to decorate the mansions with elaborate features for Christmas, Halloween and more recently as housefloats during Mardi-Gras and Jazz Fest seasons.
